Michael Jackson was born on 29 August 1958 to Joe and Katherine Jackson. He was born into a highly musical family and from a young age his obvious talent for singing was encouraged by his father.

In 1964 the Jackson 5 hit the charts and Michael was the lead singer, accompanied by 4 of his brothers. They went on to have several massive hits in the 60’s and 70’s with songs such as ‘ABC’, ‘I want you back’ and later ‘Don’t stop ‘til you get enough’.

In the early 1970’s Michael Jackson launched a solo career, although he did still sing and tour with his brothers as the Jackson 5. In 1982 he released ‘Thriller’ which went on to become the biggest selling album of all time and it propelled Michael to superstardom. The title song ‘Thriller’ also made musical history with it’s video, a send up of the horror films of the time, directed by John Landis.

From here Michael went on to release the album ‘Bad’ in 1987 and this too was a worldwide hit. It had 7 top ten singles and brought Michael Jackson even more fans. Around this time speculation about Michael’s personal life and appearance began and he was never really able to escape the rumours that were constantly surrounding him.

In the early 1990’s Michael married his first wife, Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis Presley and he made the headlines once again. The marriage did not last and they split up less than two years later. Michael then went on to marry Debbie Rowe, a nurse that he met whilst being treated for Vitiligo, a condition which affects the skin. She is thought to have been the mother for the first two of his three children – Prince Michael I and Paris. His third child Prince Michael II or Blanket as he is known was born to an unknown surrogate.

Michael was then embroiled in two child molestation cases which left him a virtual recluse until he announced that he would be playing 50 sell out concerts at the O2 arena in London. He was practising for these shows at the time of his death from a cardiac arrest on 25th June 2009.

A memorial service for Michael Jackson was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 7 July 2009 and it attracted some of the biggest names in showbiz. Over a billion people all over the world tuned in to watch this, the final performance in memory of the King of Pop.
